  • Can you tell us about your background and how you got into the skincare industry? What inspired you to become a facialist and consultant expert in beauty?

After studying aesthetics, I had the opportunity to spend a year and a half in the United States pursuing a management program while participating in sports studies, as I used to compete in athletics. Upon my return, I started my first experience in the luxury industry at the Mandarin Oriental palace in Paris, where I worked for over 5 years as a spa therapist for the spa's opening. I then continued my career at Oh My Cream for 7 years, primarily in retail teams, including the launch and management of three boutiques, the latest being the flagship on Rue Montmartre. During this time, I gained extensive knowledge about skincare and cosmetics, while also maintaining regular practice in the treatment room.

I have always been drawn to well-being and cosmetics, thanks to my mother who worked in the para-pharmacy industry for many years. The desire to become a facialist came naturally to me after these 13 years of experience and the strong desire to be closer to my clients. I felt that I needed to expand my expertise and have a comprehensive approach to skincare, including the muscles and facial bone structure, in order to meet all the needs of my clients in the art of aging gracefully. The collaboration with Jeanne Damas and her search for an expert to launch the Les Filles en Rouje skincare range naturally led us to our current collaboration.

  • You have worked in several luxury spas and beauty boutiques in Paris. What have you learned from these experiences and how have they shaped your approach to skincare?

From these experiences, I have developed a holistic vision of well-being and a deep expertise in skincare, shaped through countless interactions with my clients at Oh My Cream, some of whom I have maintained long-term relationships with (I still provide advice to some of them). My time at the Mandarin Oriental taught me how to adapt to a diverse clientele with various cultural backgrounds, always demanding the highest level of excellence that characterizes the luxury industry.

  • Congratulations on your collaboration with Rouje for the launch of Les Filles en Rouje! Can you tell us more about the skincare line and the inspiration behind it?

Thank you! The Les Filles en Rouje skincare line is a natural, effective, and fuss-free range. It consists of three skincare products: a cleansing jelly, a face cream, and a face oil, as well as two hair products: a hair mist and a hair oil. The mood is all about promoting a minimalist routine without any fuss, guaranteeing healthy skin. It has been designed to be applied with fingers, with a single gesture or spritz. It's the best of both worlds: ultra-clean formulas developed by a French laboratory with a playful and joyful approach to beauty, which is the secret of Jeanne's French Glow!

  • In your opinion, what are the latest trends in the beauty and skincare industry? How are these trends impacting the products and services that you offer?

In recent years, we have seen that younger generations are more conscious of the impact of their consumption on the planet and society, and the cosmetics industry is no exception. Among these trends, the "less is more" approach has gained traction in the clean beauty movement. It is a new mindset that questions our habits of beauty product consumption. As a result, routines are simplified, and the number of products in our bathroom decreases, making way for quality over quantity. Additionally, there is a growing trend known as "Native Owned," which emphasizes local sourcing and respect for nature. Nature sometimes offers treasures that are within our reach!

  • Which brands or products do you find most inspiring within the French beauty industry and why?

I have several in mind, but I would say Maison Manifacier is one of them. Their cosmetics are organic and responsibly made in France. The plants, most of which are grown in France, are selected for their active properties, benefits, and efficacy recognized by herbalism. I love this handmade universe!

Recently, I fell in love with the brand Fossette Paris, which was launched in 2022. This solid cosmetics brand offers a cleansing treatment, shampoo, conditioner, and an all-in-one balm for a complete hygiene routine. These products are made in France using organic ingredients and combine ecology, beauty, efficacy, pleasure, and ease of use. The plus point of this brand is that their solid skincare production uses 20 times less energy than their liquid counterparts!

Lastly, for the past few years, I have been fond of Les Huilettes, a bio, vegan, and made-in-France brand, which was actually available at Oh My Cream back then! I am a big fan of oil-based skincare, and this brand ticks all the boxes for me. Their products are based on the purest vegetable oils and essential oils, such as argan and prickly pear oil, which can be found in their Huilette Night that I adore.

  • Many people are becoming more aware of the importance of sustainability and ethical practices in the beauty industry. How do you approach these issues in your work, and what steps are you taking to ensure that your products and services align with these values?

First and foremost, to meet these expectations, it is essential to focus on expertise. This conscious consumption requires consumers to have a greater knowledge, not only concerning the effectiveness of skincare products but also their ethical aspects. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to respond to these demands. I am particularly meticulous in selecting the products I use, not only in terms of benefits for my clients' skin but also in terms of meeting their expectations regarding the impact on the planet and society. Priority is given to clean beauty and natural formulations. But it doesn't stop at products and formulations. In my opinion, it is necessary to think further: where do the ingredients come from? How are they harvested? Do the different processes in the manufacturing chain cause any pollution? Are the packaging eco-designed? These are points on which more and more brands are challenging themselves, and it's good news.

  • With the rise of clean beauty and sustainability in the beauty industry, how do you see the future of skincare evolving in terms of ingredient sourcing and product packaging?

The "less is more" approach and the need for more responsible consumption are significant trends that go beyond cosmetics and well-being. Society as a whole shows a desire to return to the essentials, to reasoned and sustainable consumption. Additionally, new technologies provide credible and serious solutions to achieve more sustainable cosmetics without compromising efficacy. Biosciences, for example, offer innovative and ecological solutions with brands like Ulé, which focuses on vertical farming to source its products with exotic plants grown without pesticides. Regarding packaging, which is one of the most obvious sources of negative impact on the planet, the widespread use of eco-responsible and refillable packaging, as well as efforts to reduce excessive packaging, are major trends.

  • With social media and influencers playing a huge role in the beauty industry, what advice would you give to consumers on how to navigate the overwhelming amount of skincare information and products available?

I urge consumers to exercise caution when it comes to information available on social media. Sometimes you find the best, but also the worst. It is important to cross-reference the information available on social media by checking it independently and not jumping into skincare protocols or routines without extensive prior research. It may be a tedious process, but it values the expertise that often makes a difference. On social media, trust demonstrated expertise rather than the number of likes. Cosmetics is a fascinating field that has become highly specialized, offering tangible benefits. However, we can also come across unpleasant surprises. Just as people now turn to a personal trainer or a nutritionist for their well-being, the same approach applies to skincare. The health of our skin significantly contributes to our overall well-being and health.

  • Are there any emerging skincare trends or ingredients that you are particularly excited about and think will become popular in the near future?

The trend today is about accepting and embracing imperfection. It's no longer just about aesthetics but genuinely about well-being and having healthy, vibrant skin. I learned this from sports—it requires a holistic approach. Exercising alone is not enough; we also need to pay attention to our diet and the quality of our sleep, for example. The same goes for skincare! That's why I'm very drawn to the holistic vision of beauty, which includes the growing trend of supplements, particularly effective in improving skin quality from within (in and out).

Another trend is the rise of "at-home" treatments with the boom of home spas. In the pursuit of simplicity, well-being, and time-saving, clients are looking for routines and treatments that transform their bathrooms into everyday spas. This calls for the use of increasingly advanced products but also requires in-depth guidance on their proper daily use, including post-treatment advice, self-massage, and the use of tools.

  • What are some of your favorite beauty products that you personally use in your daily routine? Can you share any personal tips or tricks that you use to maintain healthy and glowing skin?

It's difficult to list everything because my daily routine varies depending on the season and my current mood, but I do have some essentials!

I never go to bed without performing my double cleanse, which I learned more than 8 years ago at Oh My Cream, and now I can't do without it. My favorites for makeup removal are the Oh My Cream cleansing oil or the Pai Rosehip cleasing oil, and for cleansing, I swear by the Susanne Kaufmann Cleansing Gel with its syrupy texture.

Some of my other favorite products are:

  • Sisley's Black Rose Mask, with its addictive scent and unmatched plumping effects on the skin.

  • Nuori's eye contour (my favorite brand) for its ultra-fresh and super-hydrating/antioxidant texture, a great makeup base.

  • Sunday Riley's Luna oil, with its powerful retinoid properties that transform my skin overnight, which I alternate with Les Filles en Rouje face oil that smells divinely of orange blossom and provides an olfactory stress relief, leaving a silky finish.

  • Maison Manifacier's Céleste mist, with its rose and orange blossom fragrance, which pairs perfectly with my Les Filles en Rouje face oil.

  • Lastly, Augustinus Bader's The Cream (although it is expensive!) is a product I can no longer part with. I have never experienced such an impressive effect on my skin with a cream. It boosts radiance and instantly smoothes my skin—the holy grail of anti-aging!

As for my tips and tricks:

- I always apply very fresh water on my face, never hot water (or rarely) to avoid compromising my skin barrier.

- I practice "mewing," which involves retraining the resting position of my tongue to combat nasolabial wrinkles.

- I also practice coherent breathing for 5 minutes, with 5-second inhales and exhales, whenever I feel stressed. It helps rebalance the autonomic nervous system and relaxes my facial expressions.

  • Marie, if you could imagine and create the perfect skincare product, what would it be like? What ingredients would you use, and what benefits would it provide?

The product closest to perfection, and one that I am closely following in terms of development, would be formulated without water. The more water a product contains, the more preservatives need to be added to maintain stability. By minimizing water content, we can create products that are more concentrated in active ingredients, thereby increasing effectiveness and long-lasting effects while reducing environmental impact.

The first ingredient I would like to incorporate into a formulation is galactomyces, which has been discovered by Japanese researchers and is widely used in Asian cosmetics but less so in Europe. It is a natural component of yeast that is rich in vitamins, ferments, minerals, prebiotics, and probiotics. Its actions on the skin are multiple and astounding, including enhancing radiance, reducing pigmentation spots, and providing anti-inflammatory effects, among others.

Another ingredient I would choose is bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol, known for its multiple anti-aging benefits.

Lastly, I have a particular fondness for Marula oil, which is rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants. It protects the skin from dehydration, combats skin aging, and has cicatrizing and protective properties.

Creating such a product would combine the potency of these ingredients with a focus on sustainability and efficacy, providing comprehensive skincare benefits.
